More intensity and power than expected in what is an attractive and forward vintage – full flavoured, this has texture and structure supporting the deep earthy flavours of woody spices, dark berries, sloe and sweet plum. A Barolo of presence, nuance and complexity. Whilst the oldest vines are used to make the VV bottling, the vines used for this cuvee are far from young (up to 50 years old). Facing Serralunga on a southeast exposure, Pira is the lower part of the famous Rocche di Castiglione cru and is a monopole of the Roagna family. The soils here are a complex mixture of sandstone, clay limestone and blue marl. The vineyard exposure gives the wine that important underlying freshness. Vinified for 100 days on the skins before ageing for 5 years in mixture of large used wooden barrels and cement tanks.
