During the Russian occupation all Bulgarian vineyards were socialist, state-run this meant that the west barely saw any Bulgarian wine. The Bulgarian wine industry has had to do a lot of work since the fall of the Soviet Union. The country now produces wine with international grape varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon at great value.
