Dave Phinney established Orin Swift in 1998. The name comes from Dave’s father’s middle name, Orin, and his mother’s maiden name, Swift. Dave is the winemaker, creative director, and artistic force behind every bottle they produce.
Papillon, their Napa Valley Bordeaux blend, embodies beautiful contrasts. French for "butterfly," this wine marries all five classic Bordeaux varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Like its namesake, it evokes opposing sensations—the delicacy of a butterfly against a farmer's weathered hands, power intertwined with elegance.
Primarily sourced from Stagecoach Vineyard in Napa, with select fruit from the historic Monte Rosso Vineyard just beyond the county line, each varietal contributes its distinct personality to create a increasingly rare traditional blend. The striking label features photography by renowned winemaker and photographer Greg Gorman.
Papillon displays an opaque crimson core transitioning to a deep cardinal rim. Initial aromas reveal ripe cassis, blackberry, coastal chaparral, cedar box, and allspice. The palate mirrors these aromatics, unfolding with layers of cassis, pluot, blueberry, and boysenberry, accented by shaved fennel bulb and subtle earth. A generous, weighted mid-palate transitions seamlessly to fine, dusty tannins, closing with notes of barbecued tri-tip, Madagascar vanilla, and toffee.
