The Mastroberardino family, based in Atripalda, Italy since the 1750s, played a crucial role in preserving and revitalizing Southern Italian winemaking, particularly in the Campania region after World War II. Their most significant contribution was their unwavering commitment to indigenous grape varieties like Aglianico, Fiano, Greco di Tufo or Falanghina,  even when these varieties were unfashionable and other farmers were switching to higher-yielding alternatives.

From the post-war period until the early 1990s, they were the only winery working with local varieties, effectively preventing their extinction. Their persistence ultimately proved successful, demonstrating the exceptional quality potential of these native grapes and inspiring other producers to follow suit.

The 2008 Radici Riserva Antonio Taurasi pays homage to Antonio Mastroberardino, who passed away in 2014. Produced in the Taurasi DOCG from high-altitude clay-limestone vineyards (550m), this wine represents the culmination of extensive vineyard research that began with its first vintage in 1986. After 30 months aging in French and Slavonian oak.

Tasting notes: Intense ruby colour, offering aromas of tobacco, spices, wild berries and balsamic notes. The full-bodied palate combines elegance with fruity flavours of cherry, plum and strawberry, plus hints of liquorice and pepper. It pairs particularly well with truffles, porcini mushrooms, game, red meat and spicy dishes.

Score 96/100 · Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

The 2008 Taurasi Radici Riserva Antonio is a one-off wine made only this vintage to celebrate the incredible life and influence of Antonio Mastroberardino who passed away in January 2014. The wine is made only with fruit from the Montemarano vineyard and it ages in wood for 30 months (40% sees botte grande and 60% goes into barrique). This is a beautifully polished and sophisticated wine with a deep, dark color and an impressively silky quality to the tannins. The bouquet shows ethereal tones of dried earth, rose petal, tar, resin and cola. The 2008 vintage was especially successful terms of phenolic ripeness for color intensity and aromas. I went back to the wine an hour after tasting it and was delighted to see that it continued to evolve and open. This is an elegant wine dedicated to one of the most passionate advocates of Campania wine. Apr 2015, www.robertparker.com
