Jumilla, a challenging environment for viticulture, is home to resilient old bush vines that thrive in its hot, dusty hills. These vines produce characterful, fruit-packed wines from the local Monastrell grape. The Yellow label Monastrell from Bodegas Juan Gil offers an approachable style, leaning towards fresh, juicy, and bright red fruit characteristics.
The grapes for this wine come from 40-year-old bush vines planted in vineyards situated 700 meters above sea level, northeast of Jumilla. The sandy, chalky, and rocky soil contributes to the wine's unique profile. Harvested by hand, the grapes undergo fermentation in stainless steel tanks before aging in a combination of French and American oak barrels for approximately four months.
On the nose, this Monastrell presents rich aromas of plum and bramble, complemented by delicate notes of vanilla spice and cedar. The palate reveals layers of ripe fruit, including blackcurrant, blackberry, spicy plum, and cherry. Fine tannins are balanced by bright acidity, creating a harmonious structure.
This versatile wine pairs excellently with hearty meat and vegetable stews, as well as roast pork, making it a perfect companion for robust, flavourful dishes
