Established in 1933 by English entrepreneur Robert Bird, Esk Valley Estate began its journey as Glenvale. Bird constructed the original winery and cellars, focusing on popular fortified wines. Glenvale's rapid growth led it to become New Zealand's fifth-largest winery at its peak. In 1986, Villa Maria acquired the estate, renaming it 'Esk Valley'. This transition marked a shift in focus towards showcasing Hawkes Bay's diverse terroir and grape varieties through artisanal winemaking.
Today, Esk Valley is celebrated as a boutique winery, known for its hand-crafted premium reds and elegant whites. The winery's philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing each wine to authentically express its unique site and vintage characteristics.
The Artisanal Collection Malbec/Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon boasts an intense, deep hue characteristic of its varietal. The nose reveals luxurious aromas of ripe plums and jammy fruits, a signature of Gimblett Gravels terroir, enhanced by subtle notes of tobacco and dried herbs. The palate showcases a harmonious blend of power and concentration, courtesy of the Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, artfully balanced by the softer tannin structure of Merlot.
Perfect with grilled and roasted red meats, game, tomato base pizza & pasta dishes, rich casseroles and stews as well as mature strong cheeses
