Domaine de Lorient cultivates its vines on the granite-rich terroir of Saint-Péray, at an impressive altitude of 500 meters. The estate's four hectares surrounding the farm are planted with Roussanne (70%) and Marsanne (30%), two classic Rhône Valley white grape varieties.
These vineyards offer a stunning panorama of the Rhône Valley, with plots facing south and southeast. Natural windbreaks of locally-planted hedgerows and preserved forests shield the vines from the northern winds, creating an ideal microclimate.
Harvest is a meticulous process at Domaine de Lorient. Grapes are hand-picked and placed in small 28kg crates to maintain berry integrity. Speed is of the essence - within 30 minutes, the fruit arrives at the cellar. To preserve freshness, whole bunches are immediately pressed. Fermentation occurs in a combination of 228L and 400L barrels, using locally-cultured yeasts to express the terroir.
The winemaking philosophy at Domaine de Lorient emphasizes minimal intervention. Sulphur use is limited throughout the process, with additions made only after malolactic fermentation and adjusted if necessary at bottling. True to this approach, the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered.
The resulting wine is a testament to its terroir and careful vinification. Initially, the nose shows a touch of reduction, which gives way to enticing aromas of apricot, hazelnut, and anise. The palate is pure, taut, and elegant, showcasing the typical verticality and salinity associated with granitic soils.
This wine pairs exceptionally well with regional cuisine. Try it alongside orecchiette pasta with Romanesco cabbage, sheep's cheese, and Lorient's local raw ham
