For a hundred and thirty one years, three generations of the López de Heredia family have devoted themselves to producing exceptional and unique wines. Masterpieces which have achieved that which the founder of the company, Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, defined in the late nineteenth century as the "Supreme Rioja". Vineyard care, a scrupulous selection of grapes, ageing in oak barrels in the heart of deep underground galleries, and the later ageing in bottles, all contribute to making these illustrious wines with their exceptional bouquet. The grapes were harvested after a good overall vintage. There were two minor frosts in the vintage (a major worry for winemakers) however, both times, there was no damage to the crop. Due to a quite irregular maturation of the fruit, harvest started quite early (28th September) and finished quite late (5th November). Although quite a risk to leave parts of harvesting this late, the reward is ultimately received in the finished product. The wine is aged in barrel for 6 years being racked twice a year and finally fined with egg white. The wine was bottled unfiltered. The colour is of a very traditional style of Rioja, vibrant red leading slighty towards amber. On the nose, dried berry aromas, notes of vanilla and spice with suggestions of oxidative earthy flavours in the background. The palate is rich, dry and developed with firm tannins and acidity.
