Scacciadiavoli Montefalco Sagrantino, 75cl
£22.30

South East of Tuscany is the land locked region of Umbria. A rugged and wild place, with a long history of wine farming. The whites are often in the fresh, crisp spectrum and for the reds they have a variety which is simply unlike any other, Sagrantino. This indigenous variety is a creator of inky black, powerful, intensely tannic wines. In a sense it might appear too much for the modern world, the antithesis of the crowd pleaser, this is a wine that is for those who want an outlier and something that stands out from the masses.
100% Sagrantino, this is powerful, very bold, juicy and bright. This wine sees extended maceration, with a full month on skins, this means it is intensely full bodied, but this length of time allows for a very smooth mouthfeel. Fermentation in large, old, French oak vats and 50% barrel ageing (15% new) is just what this wine needs, oxygen is the wine’s friend as it helps to tame the powerful structure.
2015 was a fantastic vintage, allowing for full tannin and flavour development. This is a hulking brute, but one that could perform a triple-salchow.
We strongly advise a hearty meal with this one! A strong mature cheese would be a good go-to.
