Diane de Puymorin started the domaine in 1998, and quickly built an enviable reputation for quality, and with the wines’ distinctive labels they are easily recognised. The name comes from the two colours on her family coat of arms, reflecting the personality of the wines she produces, gold (Or) to signify the depth and fullness of the southern sun and its warmth, and red (Gueules - “gull” - in old French) for the character, power and roundness. Vinification using indigenous yeasts and ageing are Diane’s speciality. She infuses the wines with a personality resembling her own! The vineyards are on the southern side of the Costières de Nîmes between St.Gilles and Generac, close to the Camargue, the vines range from 5 to 90 years of age, and yields are kept low through strict pruning and green harvest. They face south and southeast on a terroir of galets roulés. They are very environmentally friendly, producing their own solar energy and compost and use natural organic products.
Qu’es aQuo (What’s this? In Occitan) is 90% 80 year old Carignan and 10% Syrah from only 20 hl/ha, and extraction is 20% by pigeage and 80% carbonic maceration, then aged for 6 months in 3 year old barriques. Perfumed, rich, complex, and elegant. Wonderful!
