Abbazia Di Novacella was established in 1142, as part of the Augustinian convent that still today remains one of the most important religious and cultural centres in central Europ. It is also one of Italy's most Northerly wineries, being located by the Austrian border. The brand new winery is in a working Abbey that doubles as a boarding school; the Gothic architecture contrasting nicely with the gleaming stainless steel! Celestino Lucin, who is making a very good name for himself in the North Eas as one fo the bst oenologists available, oversees winemaking. The vines themselves - Sylvaner, Kerner, Gewurztraminer and Verltliner to name a few, are planted at up to 600 metres above sea level and with a density reaching 7000 plants per hectare. The whites are all planted in the immediate vicinity of the Abbey, and the red varieities are principally planted at Cornaiano. Celestino is doing a great job in preserving the prestine fruit and minerality of these wines using oak to enhance their unique character. For the aromatic varietals her prefers large oak and acacia botti whil the top red wines are all aged in 225 litre barrels. Rich aromas of floral, apricot kernel and peach characters. The palate has a great texture and richness with clean balancing citrus acidity and a lovely length.
