Situated just 5 kilmetres east of Martinborough village, Escarpment's 24 hectares of distinctive alluvial gravel, terraced land stretches out along the banks of the Huangarua river. This wine is fermented in wooden French cuvees, hand plunged and aged in 50% new French oak barrels. It is a quite dense but supple wine with dark fruit, spicy oak along with savoury and nutty notes. It is a complex wine with strong sweet tannins but these are kept in check by the strong sweet fruit. The wine is a true reflection of both Maringborough's unique terroir and the skills and experience of winemaker Larry Mckenna.
Sommelier Wine Awards 2014
"Dark in colour and fruit profile, the palate is rich, with prominent, ripe tannins, good fruit and tangible oaking. Still young, it's worth reaching for the decanter for this one" SWA 2014
