Established shortly after the Second World War, Domaine Marcel Deiss consists of 64 acres (26ha) of vines in the Bergheim area of Alsace, only 3km from Colmar. In 1998, after many years of organic viticulture, the vineyards were certified Biodynamic. This isn’t a great surprise given the intense hands-on approach in the vineyard. Jean Michel Deiss (grandson of the founder) and Oenologist Marie Helene Cristofaro believe in hand-crafted wines that vividly display a sense of place.
Jancis Robinson wrote of the 2010: ‘Don't think of it as the equivalent of an entry-level Alsace that is somehow inferior to a Riesling, Pinot Gris or Gewurz, but as the encapsulation of the region's smoky, rich-but-dry fruit. This tastes thoroughly dry and racy but chock full of spice and excitement. I'd drink it over the next year ideally but it certainly won't head downhill fast.’
