Lagrein, Berger Gei, Niedrist, 75cl
The impressive vineyards of Niedrist are located on the summit of the Cornaiano village with amazing views over the Balzano Valley. The amiable and generous Ignaz Niedrist has on 5 hectares of vines and he tends them like an ornamental garden. Yields are kept very low and in a good year he might get 40 hectolitres per hectare. the wine is then made in his shed (a state of the art winery shed, but a shed all the same) where a minimal interventionist type of winemaking occurs. Ignaz believes the wine has already been made in the vineyard, and he merely needs to guide it to its natural conclusion. The result of this minute sale production, and careful attention to detail, is concentrated, complex and wondrous. Demands for these wines is high and availability small but we think it is worth it for the labels alone. From the sub zone of Gries, famous for Lagrein, the vineyard is owned by Ignaz's in laws - hence the different label - but the land is farmed by him and the vinification is carried out by him too. Aromas of blackberries and assam tea with black fruits on the palate.
