Established shortly after the Second World War, Domaine Marcel Deiss consists of 64 acres (26ha) of vines in the Bergheim area of Alsace, only 3km from Colmar. In 1998, after many years of organic viticulture, the vineyards were certified Biodynamic. This isn’t a great surprise given the intense hands-on approach in the vineyard. Jean Michel Deiss (grandson of the founder) and Oenologist Marie Helene Cristofaro believe in hand-crafted wines that vividly display a sense of place.
A lovely alliance of pea tendrils, mint, and rose petal scents Deiss’s 2008 Gewurztraminer which deftly combines oily richness of texture and residual sweetness with persistent, metaphorically cooling refreshment and lift. This polished performance should play well for at least the next 6-8 years, but don’t miss out on its flattering early showings.
