The Librandi winery works with 230 hectares of vineyards around the Ciro' region on the south coast of Calabria. Although the company was founded in 1950, the family has been working with wine for centuries, steeped in a love of tradition. At the same time, the Librandi brothers are acutely aware of the benefits of technology and work closely with consultants and academics studying local varieties, clones and vineyard density. Their concentric vineyard, which looks like an alien crop circle, is just one example of this. The wines reflect the philosophy, with modern, clean, pure fruit, melded together with distinct local character.
The Ciro Bianco is 100% Greco and is an extremely classy wine for the money. The beautiful aromas of peaches and honeysuckle hold much allure, and the crisp, dry, mineral character in the mouth brings the exciting stone fruit and floral flavours into bright focus. Modest alcohol level, too. Excellent as an aperitif, and with fish or vegetable starters.
It matches well with egg-based dishes, fish soup; crustaceans (either roasted or with sauces) and it enhances all grilled fish dishes, especially swordfish.
A 100% Greco from the Calabrian COC of Ciro, the producer is self-described as ‘Mediterranean at heat’, which certainly rings true here as this wine is so lively, summery and fruity. There’s a citrus zing to a pear drop and apple sherbet nose with soft, sweet vanilla notes. The palate displays apple, off-dry flavours and a rounded mouth-feel.
