Great wines are made in the vineyard and it is the exceptional fruit grown at the Kayena Vineyard that forms the cornerstone of the Tamar Ridge and Devil’s Corner range of wines. Located on the western banks of the Tamar River, forty kilometres north of Launceston, the Kayena Vineyard is planted to a range of cool climate varieties including Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The vision for Tamar Ridge is to produce premium quality wines highlighting the flavour, structure and elegance that are the hallmarks of true Tasmanian cool climate winemaking. Kayena vineyard in the Lower Tamar Valley has some bony and sandy soils including some gravelly patches. It is fairly maritime due to its proximity to the river on three sides of the vineyard, and produces Riesling of great quality and character. Bright, mid-gold with some green tinges, with fresh aromas of ripe apricot, melon and paw-paw alongside some spicy musky perfumes. This is a luscious and rich style with flavours of ripe apricot, melon and tropical fruits on the front palate. Balancing this lusciousness is a level of clean, fresh acidity providing a finish that is crisp and appealing. This wine teams very well with salty cheeses such as Roquefort and Danish Blue. It is also a very good match for foie gras and fresh fruit desserts. The wine has the potential to develop in bottle for many years gaining extra characters, complexity and depth of flavours.
