Molise is the second-smallest region in Southern Italy, bordering Abruzzo, Lazio, Campania and Puglia. Its wines began to gain recognition in the 1980s with the creation of the Biferno and Pentro di Isernia DOCs. The Biferno is a Montepulciano and Aglianico blend, the former from the Adriatic coast and the latter from the warmer inland areas. The wine is typical of the appellation, bold and powerful, with a real rustic warmth to it. Recently it received glowing reviews from writers like Jancis Robinson and Olly Smith.
Medium in weight this ones got all the hallmarks of a wine you would generally find further up the price scale, intense & powerful flavours of blueberry & cherry shine through with a touch of oak and smooth, mature tannins, swirl it around the glass & serve with a home made cottage pie.
Tom Cannavan, writing in the Huffington Post on 17th August 2015, recommended this 'wonderful, fruity red' '...wonderfully aromatic and seductive wine with cherry and floral lift, but a deep, plum and liquorice richness of fruit and sily texture, the tannins mellowed into a flowing molten mass into the finish."
