Gusbourne Estate sits on the low slopes of the ancient Kentish escarpment at Appledore. The extensive two hundred hectare Estate is on a single site with twenty hectares under vine cultivation with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes. Gusbourne are currently planting a further ten hectares of these Champagne clone vines, placing the extent of their plantings amongst the largest vineyards in England. The fine wines are crafted from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes. Once blended, the wines are stabilised and filtered for bottling. In accordance with the classic 'Champenoise' method, secondary fermentation takes place within the bottle. Uniquely, the wines are vini?ed in this way with at least 22 months of lees ageing. Gusbourne follow the traditional process of remuage, disgorgement and dosage before further ageing. The house style requires that they age well beyond the mandatory requirements, and ensures that they only release these distinctive wines to market once they are satisfied that they meet their own exacting standards of quality. The Blanc de Blanc, 100% Chardonnay, is pale yellow in colour with small bubbles and a gentle mousse. Aromas of lemon and grapefruit citrus mix with subtle, seductive undertones of butterscotch and brioche. The palate is dry with a soft and textured mouth-feel, balanced by fresh and focused acidity. Intense flavours of lemon citrus are complemented with notes of caramel and vanilla from extended autolysis. The finish is long and persistent, making this a top example of this style.
